Module 2: Typography

Image
In Module 2, I learned about typography and how to apply the essential map elements. In this lab I properly labeled a map of Florida including its major rivers, cities and wetlands. I followed the typographic guidelines to apply proper type placement for each feature type (point, line and polygon). Using ArcGIS pro and the data layers provided, I was able to successfully label and annotate the important features and apply my own customizations to improve clarity.  The first customization I made to the map was improving the color scheme to distinguish between land and water features. To do this, I made the rivers blue and the swamps a greenish/brown because it was not only intuitive to the natural colors but also not distracting and easy on the eyes. The second customization I made was changing the color of the river labels so that they were more visible against the background of the map. The original turquoise was really light and hard to read, so I made it a couple shades darker t...

Module 1: Map Critique

Image
This map does a really good job of meeting several map design principles including map substantial information, effectively label maps and minimize map crap. The map shows substantial information without being overcluttering, making it easy to understand its purpose. Lastly, the map is effectively labeled with easy to understand symbols, making the information easily communicable to the reader. I like that this map uses simple colors that are not distracting, making it easy on the eyes. Additionally, I particularly like the professional aesthetic, making the map appear credible and clean. Therefore, I believe this is a well-designed map.  This map does a poor job of appealing to the map design principles, specifically map substantial information, effectively label things, and map layout. This map does not provide substantial information because a lot of it requires prior knowledge. For example you can infer that the map is trying to depict where the shows are based because y...

About Me

Hello everyone!  My name is Sara Hart and I am so excited to be a part of this class. I spent a majority of my life in Tucson, Arizona where I grew up and attended my first two years of college. I since have moved all over the place, pursuing my passion in marine animal rescue and rehabilitation. I currently live in Fort Myers, FL where I work as a wildlife rehabilitator. I am getting my Master's certification in GIS because I want to open more job opportunities for me and learn some new skills that I can apply to a career in conservation. Please find attached my story map telling you a little about the places I have lived.  https://arcg.is/1q8mKa2
